What’s the point of HIV prevention? (Plenary speech)
AFAO HIV Educators Conference, Sydney, Australia, 25th May 2010
Speakers: Ford Hickson
This plenary talk for an HIV educators conference considers the unspoken goals behind intervening on gay and bisexual men's sexual behaviour in the name of HIV prevention. Three versions of the epidemic are presented: a stigmatising narrative in which HIV risk is the property of other people; a public health narrative in which HIV risk is shared by the entire population; and a community narrative in which HIV risk is both shared by the population and is balanced by desires and needs for living well.
