Evaluation of a national sexual health groupwork programme
Duration: August 2007 - September 2008
GMFA, on behalf of the CHAPS Partnership, are co-ordinating and co-delivering a national programme of short groupwork courses for gay and bisexual men. Sigma Research are assisting in the evaluation of the programme. The programme consists of three elements:
Basic facilitation skills course
A five day training course for staff and volunteers of the ten CHAPS agencies. The courses are run twice, once in Sheffield (October / November 2007) and once in London (January / February 2008) and aim to provide trainees with the necessary skills for delivering short sexual health courses to gay and bisexual men. The training courses will increase the capacity of agencies to run groupwork courses.
The evaluation for this element consists of: (1) telephone interviews with managers for the CHAPS agencies about the need for the intervention and the selection of trainees; (2) a self-completion before-and-after self-rating of facilitator competencies by trainees; (3) telephone interviews with the trainers of the skills course; (4) telephone interviews with trainees after their first one-day course delivery.
Advertising the groupwork programme
An awareness campaign to alert men to the existence of the courses, what they can do for them and how to book. The campaign consists of mass media and online adverts and local promotion by CHAPS partners using small media.
The evaluation for this element consists of (1) prompted recognition of the promotional materials in The Gay Men’s Sex Survey) 2008 to gauge the penetration of the adverts into the target audience; (2) data gathered during booking will establish the number of enquiries, bookings and attendees, describing the profile of men at each stage and how they heard about the course.
One day groupwork courses
Three different one-day courses each delivered in quick succession in ten cities covering (a) gay sex education, (b) gaining confidence and (c) establishing relationships. The courses are co-facilitated by GMFA and the CHAPS partner in each city.
The evaluation for this element consists of (1) self-completion questionnaires self-rating performance by both trainers after each workshop; (2) self-completion questionnaires for each course attender at three points in time (before the course, immediately following the course and at three months follow-up) focussing on changes in prevention need and sexual risk behaviours.
